3 Rules to Help You Wipeout Your Entire Internet Presence

Frankie • Mar 11, 2020

Doing the removal process of all your content from the internet is not an easy task. Although it is possible, it will take lots of work, patience, and time, to wipe everything manually.

Technically, you can go through all your accounts, posts, and comments, and click delete one by one, and you’ll be able to remove your Internet presence. Rationally speaking, however, it would probably take you months if not years to achieve a full manual content wipeout.

Content involves, but is not limited to images, mentions, social media tags, email accounts, videos, comments, purchasing, and banking information, and more. Since the social media world today moves at a rapid pace, content can easily be spread, saved, and duplicated in just a matter of seconds. This is why posts, images, and videos can become viral so fast.

Nevertheless, removing your presence from the Internet is still possible. In this article, we’ll share three rules that will help you with your content removal attempts:

Rule #1: Locate the original source

Assuming that a photo of you shows up on Google images search or a video about you or with you in it is uploaded on YouTube, keep in mind that these platforms are not responsible for that upload. For this reason, you cannot ask Google, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter to delete the content right away.

In such situations, you will need to locate the original source of the upload, and you’ll have to do this for every copy of that piece of content. If you’re not the person who uploaded the content, you need to ask the person who did to remove it for you.

Rule #2: Ask nicely

If you uploaded a piece of content in the past, you have the intellectual property and copyright to do whatever you want with them. There are times, however, when the image or video you no longer want to be seen on the Internet was uploaded by a friend or relative.

Remember, you’ll first need to locate the source of the content, then ask that person nicely and explain why you don’t want it on the Internet anymore. However, this task can become trickier and more difficult when you don’t personally know the person. For some people, especially for well-known individuals, such as social media influencers and Internet celebrities, their content can be duplicated and re-uploaded.

In most cases, these uploaders are protected under the Fair Use Act, prominently for the ones whose uploads are transformative. These people have the right to this content, and you’ll have to do more work in sourcing them all and asking them nicely to delete the content, especially if they don’t violate the Fair Use Act.

Rule #3: Don’t give up

A steadfast rule in trying to remove your content or Internet presence is to not give up. Though this is self-explanatory, you won’t be able to completely delete your online existence forever once you stop trying. The process is daunting and will require maximum effort, which is why you’ll need an undying desire to complete this process.

Conclusion

Wiping your entire Internet presence is not impossible, but it will take lots of work. Strong willpower and thick skin are essential as well to execute it since you will certainly receive rejections from people or the websites.

You will need to dedicate most of your time and effort to complete a whole Internet presence wipeout. If, however, you don’t want to or you can’t commit to this arduous and complex task, keep in mind that you can always avail of content removal services to do the job for you!
